Derwent anglers finding it tough

Sep 20 2007

by Kevin Dinsdale, The Journal

WILD and windy conditions on Friday kept the catch returns down in the annual Mayor of Gateshead’s annual angling competition at Derwent Reservoir.

Fly anglers enjoyed the greatest success among the 84 competitors, two recording eight-fish limits. The bait anglers had a more challenging day, with an offshore wind pushing the fish further out into deeper water.

R Hill, with eight for 15lb, took top spot in the fly section. S Scott, with eight for 14lb 4oz, was second while J Carr had five for 8lb 9oz.

Ashington’s Hirst Park Trout Tickers had an outing to Fontburn Reservoir on Sunday. Despite the wind and rain the 20 members landed 39 trout for 65lb 2oz. Andrew Whitehall had the heaviest bag of 7lb 12oz and won a free day’s fishing supplied by Northumbrian Water. Bradley Mackey had the heaviest fish at 2lb 9oz and won a £10 gift voucher to spend at Game Fishing supplies in Morpeth.

Ian Woods of Redcar, fishing a red Montana, had the heaviest fish of the week at Jubilee Lakes at 19lb 4oz. Dave Woodcock from Darlington took one of 16lb 12oz on a Minkie and Michael Pounder of Darlington, fishing an Olive Zonker, brought a trout of 13lb 6oz to the net.

J Bolam had the heaviest fish of the week at Langley Dam with a hard-fighting rainbow of 7lb 6oz. R Wood had the heaviest bag with three for 12lb 8oz. The fishery will be closed from 8am to 4pm on Saturday for a club booking.

Most of the fish brought to the net at Witton Castle Lakes have been taken sub-surface on slow sinking or intermediate lines with the trout only showing on the surface during the middle part of the day. The best fish of the week fell to Brian Laddie from Consett with a 17lb 8oz rainbow.
