STEVE Mann from Newton Aycliffe, fishing a Bloodworm, took the week’s heaviest fish at Jubilee Lakes – a cracking rainbow of 21lb 10oz – while Karen Cardwell of Darlington took a fish of 11lb 9oz on a Black Apps Bloodworm. With the nights cooling down slightly, fishing has been much improved at Jubilee although some anglers struggled as it warmed up towards the weekend. Although other patterns have been taking fish, the Buzzer, in all its forms, has reigned supreme with the standard, Suspender and Shipman’s accounting for good numbers of trout. Before the high pressure system arrived at the end of the week, cloudy skies had fish rising all day to a myriad of tiny midge at Sharpley Springs/Water. On bright days the best of the sport was early morning and late evenings. Ashington angler Trevor Wadds returned 30 trout, including a hard-fighting doubler, in two visits using slowly drifted Diawl Bachs. Another hatching midge imitation, the Dinky Do, took a magnificent 13-pound rainbow for Richard Landsbury of South while that summer favourite – the Damsel – bagged one of 14lb for Sunderland’s Ann Viney. Sharpley regular Jackie Carr winkled out a nice 10-pounder during a trying session and Washington’s Gary Tomlinson took a fish of 13lb 8oz on a dark nymph. Given cloud cover the Albert and Alice lakes have been alive with rising fish and the marginal brownies, particularly in the Doxford lake, will respond to small dry flies, Beetles and Hare’s Ear nymphs. As the light fails, great sport can be had pulling or twitching bushy sedge patterns, poppers and, of course, Daddies. C Young of Rowlands Gill, with a well conditioned, hard-fighting trout of 6lb 8oz, had the week’s heaviest fish at Jubilee Lakes as well as recording the week’s heaviest bag with three for 12lb 8oz.
