Coarse angling

Aug 5 2007

by Paul Armstrong, Sunday Sun

SPORT throughout the region continues to improve with the warmer conditions encouraging most species to feed well.

Both rivers and stillwaters are attracting hosts of anglers eager to make the most of some of the best sport for quite a while.

The River Wear certainly produced the goods for 16-year-old Scott Jose when he fished breadflake and feeder to take a superb brace of roach, which weighed in at 2lb 5oz and 2lbs. Scott also took another couple of smaller fish weighing 1lb 12oz and 1lb 11ozs.

Roach and dace are dominating at Whittle Dene where both the Great Southern and the Northern are showing great form, double figure nets the norm on these waters.

Aldin Grange is on top form especially for carp and tench, 25 of the latter falling to Kevin Taylor during a short session. The Silver fish lake is fish-a-chuck with most baits doing the business.

The Big Waters large lake turned out to be hard going for the seventh match in the club’s evening series last Tuesday.

Crystal clear water and calm condition kept the expected bream nets away and it was down to small fish to decide the result.

Eric Brown ran out the eventual winner with a net of roach and perch for 3lb 2ozs.

The final match in the series will be at Dissington next Tuesday, not Marden Quarry as stated in the match calendar.

Today sees an 8am meet for those wanting to fish the Whittle Dene sweepstake, cost £10.

Wansbeck & Cramlington fish an evening series match on Milkhope and Tuesday evening is the monthly meeting of the Darlington branch of the Pike Anglers Club at the Coxhoe Club starting a 7.30pm. New and prospective members will be made welcome.

Thursday evening is another of the BWAC junior series at Dissington Pond.
