GEORGE BARKER took advantage of the better sport on the Bywell Syndicate beat to reel in a 17lb sea-liced beauty.

Also among the fish was John Little who landed a brace of eight pounders, while George Nicholson Senior from Wallsend caught a 10lb salmon on fly, as did Kevin Parker from Spennymoor.

George Nicholson Jnr also reeled in a brace of 8lb beauties at the weekend using fly.

Stanley angler Paul Machiarelli and Brian Lowther caught salmon in the Hexham area, weighing 16lb 8oz and 9lb and 16lb. These fish fell to a Flying C and a Rapala.

Fishing the Northumbrian Anglers Federation waters at Ovingham, Nigel Robinson landed a grilse of 6lb on fly and at Ovingham, Robin Shellard, a visiting rod from Somerset, caught his first Tyne salmon – a grilse of 6lb 8oz landed on the Federation stretch of water at Ovingham on fly.

Tony Rogers was successful on the NERAC waters landing a cracking 22lb clean-run cock salmon while fishing near Haydon Bridge on the South Tyne.

On Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters Newton Aycliffe rod Ritchie Morris, landed sea-trout of 9lb 8oz and 8lb as well as salmon of 8lb and 6lb – all to fly and all but one returned.

Steve Hill from Yorkshire landed four grilse around 5lb and an 8lb salmon all to Shrimp flies.

Roger Craig took a 7lb salmon and 2lb 8oz sea-trout on fly, while John Shields from South Shields took salmon of 8lb and 6lb at Bywell Quarry on fly.

Kevin Smith from Whitley Bay landed a fresh-run 5lb grilse from the Till at Doddington on a Shrimp Fly.

Colin Storey from Fenham landed a 3lb 8oz sea-trout off Irvine House on the Border Esk.

  • LOCAL rivers are showing their bones and further rain is needed, although the River Tyne is still benefiting from Kielder Reservoir releases.
  • ANOTHER North East youngster has broken into the England Youth Fly Fishing Team. He is 13-year-old Matthew Holdroyd from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Matthew has already represented England in Scotland and will be off to Ireland to represent his country on Lough Conn in 2008. Watch this column to see how he gets on.
  • SHARPLEY SPRINGS will once again be hosting the Jack Charlton Disabled Anglers Association Children’s Day on Sunday, September 16. Over 30 disabled children are expected to take part.
