Newcastle Diamonds boss George English is not ruling out the possibility of his side completing a double in the return Premier Trophy match in Cumbria tonight. And that is despite last Sunday's close call, when the Diamonds clinched a thrilling 47-46 victory over Workington in the last heat at Brough Park, He said: "We have nothing to play with in terms of a lead to help us bag the bonus point, so we are going there looking for a win. "Derwent Park is a place where we generally do not do well, but there were many positive comments from George Stancl and the rest coming, as they did, on the back of a sensational recovery to beat the Comets." If the Diamonds are to have any chance of success tonight, they must improve their gating which, over the first half of last Sunday's match, was woeful. Just like Newcastle, Stoke Potters, tomorrow's opponents at Byker in another Premier Trophy match (6.30), have a high-scoring trio at the top end of the team in Mark Lemon, Alan Mogridge and Robbie Kessler. However, German international Kessler blows hot and cold on his trips to Newcastle so the Diamonds will be looking to chalk up a second home win. English added: "Stoke are a side who collectively ride Brough Park well and a lot will depend on which Kessler turns up. "If it's the one who scored an 18-point maximum a few years back, we might have our work cut out, but if it's the six-point man of recent times, we should have less pressure on us." Poor weather last Sunday ruled out the start of the `Mountain Bike Challenge', an event where each week four supporters are invited to complete one lap of the track. At the end of the season, the fan who has recorded the fastest time will be presented with one of the bikes as well as picking up a cash prize. |
