Table tennis: Meads upsets the form book

Darlington's David Meads produced one of his best tournament performances to date to win the Boys Singles in the Tees Active-sponsored Stockton Junior 4 Star championships at Thornaby Pavilion over the weekend.

Third seed Meads upset the form book by beating one of England's top young prospects, Gavin Evans from Nottinghamshire, in the final.

Meads' attacking play was too quick and accurate for Evans, with the Darlington player winning by 3 games to 1.

The same approach was just as effective in the semi final when Meads beat the second seed, Danny Reed of Ormesby, also by 3 games to 1.

Meads remained unbeaten throughout the weekend as Darlington won the Junior Boys team event, beating the London Club, Barnet by 3-0 in the semi-final and Ormesby by the same score in the final.

In this match Meads beat Damien Nicholls 3-1, whilst his team-mate Bradley Evans beat Danny Reed 3-0.

The Darlington pair won the doubles by 3-0 to seal the victory. In the semi final Ormesby beat London's leading club, York Gardens 3-0.

Although Gavin Evans was beaten in the final of the Junior Boys singles, he won the other two events in which he competed, the Cadet boys singles, where he beat Matthew Ware of Hampshire 3-0 in the final, and William Maybanks of Hertfordshire by the same score in the semi.

Evans combined with his brother, Myles, to win the Cadet Boys team event, competing for the Grantham Tornadoes club.

In the final they beat the Hampshire club of Matthew Ware and Garth Kinloke 3-1.

The Junior Girls singles was won by the second seed, Caroline Hallows of Cheshire who won a five set final against the third seed, Rachel Jamieson of Essex in a close fought match by 3 sets to 2.

The top seed, Emma Vickers of Derbyshire, was beaten for the second time in two days by Rachel Jamieson by 3 sets to 2.

The first win for Rachel was in Saturday's Cadet final where she overturned the seeding to win the event by 3-1.

Other than the Boys Team final, the closest the Ormesby players came to a title was in the Grade One Girls singles where Rachel Greener beat Caroline Linz of Buckinghamshire by 3-1 and Mary Fuller from Yorkshire by 3-2, to reach the final, where she met one of the current England squad players, Melissa Wright of Yorkshire, with the Sheffield player taking the title by 3 games to 1.
