Tennis: Murray's fightback ends in heartbreak

Sep 3 2005

By The Journal

Andy Murray's US Open heroics eventually turned into heartbreak as he went out in the second round against Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

The 18-year-old Scot, who came through an epic tussle with Romanian Andrei Pavel in his opening clash, again showed his fighting spirit as he rallied from two sets down against Clement.

However, this time there was no fairytale ending as his wily 27-year-old opponent regained his composure to clinch a 6-2 7-6 (7/2) 2-6 6-7 (7/4) 6-0 success.

Murray began brightly enough against the 2001 Australian Open finalist but Clement's experience soon began to show with a break of serve in the fourth game.

The Briton tried hard to get back on level terms but could find few cracks in Clement's game, and the pressure got the better of the Scot in game eight when he dropped his serve once more to hand his opponent the first set.

Murray's frustration was apparent at the start of the second set when the match was held up for several minutes after the youngster challenged the umpire over a shot which he argued had been hit long by Clement.

However, the delay did not appear to affect either player with the set following serve as Murray rallied to get back into the match.

Having held off a break point in the fourth game, a lapse of concentration four games later saw Murray again drop his serve, though, following some clever play by Clement.

Yet the Scot came back aggressively in the next game and, with the pressure on the Frenchman, Clement struck the ball too long, allowing Murray to break back immediately. It eventually took a tie-break to decide matters, but although things began well for Murray, a well-hit back-handed volley gave Clement the initiative and the Frenchman never looked back. Despite the daunting task facing him, Murray refused to let his head drop and began the third set in impressive fashion, producing a series of powerful forehands to keep Clement on his toes. And with tiredness beginning to creep into the 27-year-old Frenchman's legs, Murray seized his chance in the sixth game as Clement's serve let him down, allowing the Briton to break for the first time in the match.

It was the boost Murray needed and after holding his own service game, the Scot once more exposed some poor play by his opponent as Clement hit a forehand into the net to hand the youngster a second break and the third set.

The fourth set went routinely with serve until a tight 10th game, when Murray had three set points but could not convert any.

The Scot was then immediately under pressure himself at 15-40 but held his nerve to save the two break points before two successive aces eventually put him 6-5 up.

Clement served well to force another tie-break but this time it was Murray who dominated proceedings.

A superb backhand lob gave the Scot a mini-break and he quickly raced into a 5-1 lead following some wayward play from Clement.

The Frenchman did pull one mini-break back but Murray hung in there to level it up at two sets apiece.

Just as in the first round, Murray had to call for medical assistance early in the deciding set.

This time there had been no vomiting, however, with the Scot needing treatment on his right thigh after showing clear signs of discomfort during the second game.

Soon after resuming, Murray was a break down when he double faulted at deuce and then sent a routine sliced backhand wide of the line.

Clement clinically went 3-0 ahead with a game to love and suddenly things looked grim again for Murray.

The Scot looked a forlorn figure as he then gave away another break and although he bravely saved three match points at 0-5 there was no coming back for Murray.
