Table Tennis: Northfield stars

A team of Teesside youngsters have scooped a major regional title. The Northfield School Under-13 girls team from Billingham won the Northern Championship of the English Schools Table Tennis competition in Blackpool. The lasses defeated Dowdales School of Cumbria 7-1 in the final and will now compete in the national finals in Leicester later this month. The Northfield team consisted of Lauren Parfitt, Becky Lavelle, Danielle Horsley and Katie Burge. Two other Northfield teams were second in their sections. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT The Under-16 boys team - Anthony Wright, Jonathan Reilly, Craig Grounds and Harry Anthony - came close to winning a place in the national finals. Anthony Wright was unbeaten throughout. The Under-16 Girls team - Rebecca Orley, Michelle Cooper, Helen Brown, Jenny King and Rachael Horsley - also reached the Northern final. In the primary section, Billingham South Primary School were North of England runners up. Their team consisted of Emma Reilly, Emma Scott, Katy Hugill, Emily Thwaite and Amy Hugill. Northfield is one of the strongest schools for table tennis in the United Kingdom. Standards are improving and even better results can be expected in the future.
