F1: Montoya vows to keep winning

Oct 25 2004

Formula One, Evening Gazette

Juan Pablo Montoya believes his victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix is a sign of things to come for 2005.

The Colombian gave Williams their first victory of the season at Interlagos in his final race before a winter move to McLaren.

He fought out a tense duel with Kimi Raikkonen to triumph by just one second after changeable conditions gave the drivers a real headache.

Montoya will team up with Raikkonen at McLaren next season and he is expecting big things of his partnership with the Finn.

The pair are seen as potential world champions of the future and Montoya hopes they will be more regular challengers for victory next season after enduring difficult campaigns in 2004.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to working with Kimi for next year. The position we have next year could be really strong.

"I've had four years with Williams and I really wanted to close those four years with a win. I think it's great.

"My first race here was in 2001 and I thought I could win it and I was robbed.

"It was great. For Williams it was good, for everybody it was really good."

Montoya confessed he feared Raikkonen had too much pace for him but hailed his team's decision to switch to dry tyres early in a race which began in light rain.

Rubens Barrichello, who started on pole position, saw his dreams of a home victory shattered by the early rain, although he at least finished for the first time in ten attempts in Brazil, claiming third.

Fernando Alonso led early on but ended the race fourth for Renault.

BAR secured second place in the constructors' championship but the season ended on a disappointing note for Jenson Button, who retired early on with mechanical trouble.

Takuma Sato scored their only points with fifth.

World champion Michael Schumacher overcame the handicap of starting 18th to take points for seventh while brother Ralf, in his final race for Williams, was one spot ahead.

Felipe Massa, on home ground, scored the final point for Sauber.
