Speedway: Diamonds fail to sparkle in Trophy

Apr 13 2004

By The Evening ChronicleBy Barry Wallace, The Evening Chronicle

The Newcastle Diamonds have extended their losing run in the Premier Trophy to seven matches.

After a very promising start, they went down 56-38 to Glasgow Tigers at Brough Park last night.

The Scots also took the bonus point for an aggregate 116-73 victory.

It all started so promisingly for the Diamonds when Kevin Little held on to an early lead in the opening heat to defeat George Stancl.

With Richard Juul coming from the back on the penultimate lap to take third place, Newcastle took a 4-2.

And when reserves Jamie Robertson and William Lawson repeated their 5-1 success of the previous day at Glasgow in heat two, the Diamonds led 9-3.

But it proved too good to last.

It took less than five seconds of heat three, when Aussie Scott Smith clattered into the fence on the first bend and wrecked his bike, to put the skids under the Diamonds and pave the way for another night of Newcastle misfortune.

Smith, on a high after top-scoring at Glasgow 24 hours earlier, started from the outside gate and was the victim of the domino effect as the three riders alongside him all moved over slightly, leaving him nowhere to go but into the fence.

With snapped frame and forks, Smith's bike was out of commission and he was not competitive on bikes borrowed from Little and Robertson.

Smith's team partner Lee Smethills was only marginally better after blowing his engine at Glasgow on Sunday and they mustered only four points from their three outings together.

Glasgow's powerful top five were again on song, winning 11 races between them, and it was left to Little, Robertson and Juul to carry the fight on behalf of the Diamonds.

Juul won heat eight and also featured in the race of the season so far when he spoiled Shane Parker's maximum in heat 13 in a blanket finish also involving race winner Stancl.

Little repeated his earlier win over Stancl in heat 11, the Newcastle rider picking up six points for his tactical ride triumph to cut Glasgow's advantage to eight points at that stage.

Diamonds' team manager George English said: "We have had so much bad luck it is getting to the stage where we are wondering if we are ever going to get a rub of the green.

"Both Lee Smethills and Scott Smith are facing huge bills after their weekend problems and we can only keep battling on waiting for a break which must surely come soon."

NEWCASTLE: Kevin Little 14; Richard Juul 10; Jamie Robertson 6; Lee Smethills 4; William Lawson 2; Scott Smith 2.

GLASGOW: James Grieves 13; Shane Parker 13; Paul Bentley 9; George Stancl 9; Graham Jones 6; Corey Blackman 5; Barry Campbell 1.
