Birtley's Martin Ward burst on to the international scene when he won a gold medal at the prestigious Tampere tournament in Finland.
Ward, a triple national schoolboy champion, first beat a Russian and then, after a bye into the final, defeated a Swede to lift the biggest prize.
"It was a tremendous performance all round and the England officials are delighted with him," Birtley's head coach Ronnie Rowe said.
Ward won his third schoolboy title recently when his stablemate Travis Dickinson clinched his second national championship. Both will fight in the Junior Olympics.
Jon-Lewis Dickinson, brother of Travis, will begin the defence of his title when he fights in the Junior ABAs at Barnsley tomorrow night along with another Birtley boxer Daniel Lewis.
