Boxing: Titles put on line by Ryan and Danny

Apr 13 2004

By The Evening ChronicleBy John Gibson, The Evening Chronicle

Tommy Conroy is lining up title defences for two of his champions Ryan Kerr and Danny Moir.

Conroy is scheduling unbeaten Kerr to defend his Northern Area super middleweight crown against Carlisle's Gary Dixon.

Meanwhile, Gateshead's Danny Moir is prepared to put up his British Masters light middleweight belt to a challenge from Gary Porter. The pair have already fought a draw this season.

All that remains is to arrange dates and venues.

Regardless of the title fights, Conroy is intending to put his champions on view at his next dinner show in Seaburn on May 14 - the first time his club has scheduled a Friday date - but significantly he is also looking at the possibility of staging an open show.

Conroy is contemplating going back to the Crowtree Leisure Centre, scene of some great title fights involving Billy Hardy and John Davison.

"I want to box Kerr and Moir as well as my latest signing Martin Marshall, who is from Sunderland and has a local following," Conroy said.

The Tyne-Wear area has been starved of professional shows for a while outside of Conroy's dinner dates for club members only.

That to a great extent has been due to a lack of boxers of stature in the area but Tommy now has three champions, including Area beltholder Eddie Haley, to front shows or at least fill the undercard.

Tommy is anxious to see Kerr push ahead with his career. The Scot should now be stepping up in class but he has to show a consistent hunger for gym work if he's to make the next step.

"It's up to Ryan," admitted Conroy. "I can only do so much. He has to want the rest."

Kerr failed to make the middleweight limit for his Northern Area title fight which had to be rescheduled at super middleweight but Conroy insists: "I've had him undergo tests, checking his body weight etc, and he can still make 11st 4lb if he wishes. That is his best fighting weight."

World darts champion Phil Taylor, a boxing fanatic and friend of world champion Ricky Hatton, will be guest speaker at Conroy's dinner show next month.
