Terry Degnan, back running the Washington club, today hailed the performance of his light heavyweight Oswald Baker.
Baker took a points decision off Colin Mason on a Birtley promoted show at the Federation Brewery in Dunston and Degnan insisted: "For a small club like ours to get one over Birtley on their own show is a feather in our cap.
"This was one of the best bouts I've seen in a long time. Both fighters were gladiators. They were a credit to their sport."
Two teenage girls are to be matched for a third time after fighting one another twice in a week.
The first decision went to Karen Wright, from Ashington, who represents the Blaydon club, but in the return Benwell's Maxine Laws stopped her in the second round.
