Boxing: Birtley boxers are feeling champion

Mar 30 2004

By John Gibson, The Evening Chronicle

Birtley's Martin Ward has become a triple national schoolboy champion.

And his stablemate Travis Dickinson completed a marvellous day in Dagenham when he won a schoolboy title for the second successive year.

The reward for Ward is a trip to Finland to fight in the Tammer Bay tournament in a fortnight's time, while both he and Dickinson will take part in the Junior Olympics.

"They both did very well against massive opponents," said Birtley's junior coach Graeme Rutherford.

Dickinson defeated Patrick Waites (West Ham) in spectacular style and Ward beat Canvey Island's Aaron Dainty.

"Travis was two points down going into the last round but he dumped Waites on his backside four times and his corner threw in the towel," said Rutherford.

"Ward fought a good tactical fight and showed how adaptable he is."

Birtley almost scored a hat-trick of victories but Damon Slater was beaten by two points on countback after his fight was scored a draw. The area also produced schoolboy champions in Glenn Foot of Marley Potts and Chris Wallace (Durham College).

Grainger Park's Duggie Curran, a former champion himself, lost on points but his coach Micky Johnson told me: "His opponent, Dunfield from West Ham, is the best prospect I've ever seen - the complete boxer-fighter.

"The West Ham club had no fewer than five finalists but this lad was the ace. Even so, Duggie never took a backward step and took him to a points decision."

Newcastle's John Watson was unlucky in the Senior ABA finals, losing on points to David Mulholland at Wembley.

"It was very close and John did extremely well," Area secretary Ron Harvey told me. "The only thing that beat him was experience - Mulholland was already an ABA champion and an international.

"But Watson came back strongly."
