Rye House Rockets 43 (Rye House won aggregate point 108-73) NEWCASTLE recovered from last night’s early six point deficit to grab a home Premier League victory over Rye House less than 24 hours after a 65-26 thrashing when visiting the same opponents. Temporary captain Josef Franc led the revival by winning both heats nine and 12 as the Diamonds turned the Rockets’ 27-21 lead into their own 38-24 advantage. In between Franc’s successes, guest George Stancl teamed up with Danish teenager Jonas Raun for an eventful 5-1 in heat 10. Rye House’s Tai Woffinden crashed out of the first version before Stancl and Raun went clear of Tommy Allen in the re-run. Although Raun was caught out by the bumpy track, allowing Allen past him, he re-caputured second place superbly on the final lap. On Saturday night at Hoddesdon, Glasgow’s Craig Watson, guesting for injured skipper Christian Henry, partnered Raun to give Newcastle an ideal start with a 4-2 in the opening heat. But Rye House dominated the rest of the match to break the 60-point barrier. Newport Wasps 55 Redcar Bears 38 (Newport won the aggregate point 97-86) JAMES Grieves scored over half of Redcar’s total in yesterday’s Premier League defeat at the Hayley Stadium when he won all six of his races for a 21-point maximum that included a tactical victory for double points. It was the perfect answer from Grieves to the jeers of the home fans after he’d been thrown out of Newcastle’s defeat last year. But with skipper Gary Havelock being the Bears only other race winner, the Wasps wiped out Redcar’s six point advantage from the reverse fixture to take all three points. BERWICK’S return fixture at Stoke was washed out as the Bandits came to terms with the damage from Saturday’s 48-42 home defeat by the Potters that included a broken ankle for reserve David Meldrum and a damaged shoulder for captain Michal Makovsky. They are both likely to miss the rest of the season.
