JON GOLDING is ready to put his enjoyment to one side to help Newcastle Falcons wrap up 2007 with a statement of intent. The strong-running prop (right) loves to get his hands on the ball and crash through gaps in midfield, and is desperate to help his team-mates secure a rare Premiership away win at Saracens this afternoon. The Falcons head to Vicarage Road (kick-off 4pm) for their Sky-televised clash, intent on stealing away with their first away league win in more than a year. With confidence surging through the squad despite a tight 20-13 home defeat last weekend at the hands of Gloucester, Golding said he is prepared to do whatever it takes to help the side win. And if that means subduing his natural instincts, the former Rotherham man said he has no issue with that whatsoever. “I do enjoy the ball-carrying side of things, and at times I wish I was a back!” said Golding. “I love to charge around and get my hands on the ball as much as I can, but I know that’s only part of the job description at prop and that I have to take care of the bread and butter stuff first and foremost.” Golding’s bread and butter revolves around the scrummage, and with All Black powerhouse Carl Hayman packing down alongside him, he could not be more excited by the challenge of squaring up to a tough Saracens front-row. He said: “Saracens are a good team and in fantastic form, but I truly believe we can go there and win. “They have an excellent pair of tight heads in Census Johnston and Cobus Visagie, so it will be a big test in that area but I’m hugely excited by it. “Carl coming in doesn’t mean a huge amount of change to my own game, it’s just a case of another good player being at the club,” he said. “We are blessed at the moment with some great props like Davey Wilson, Micky Ward, Carl Hayman, Joe McDonnell, Johnny Williams and everyone coming through the academy, so from a propping point of view there is a lot of competition for places which can only be good for the team. “Carl’s a big man and a great scrummager, who is going to give this club a lot of joy, but he is only part of what is a great team effort – everyone plays a big part and we have good players throughout the pack.” Taking on a team that has not lost at home in six straight matches, Golding said the Falcons harbour no fears around their chances of victory. He said: “People on the outside of this group are probably expecting Saracens to beat us, but inside our squad there’s a massive belief that if we click as well as we know we can, we can work hard and get the result. “We know what we are capable of, we’ve been written off by the pundits and that suits us down to the ground. “It’s frustrating, because we feel like we’ve sorted out a lot of issues upfront and we’re so close to turning that improvement in to results. “All round we were pretty happy with the pack last Sunday, although there are always things you can do better. “The scrums and line outs have been going well, but we need to finish them off more effectively, like turning a good driving maul in to a scoring driving maul. “Everything is there in place, we just need to start winning games, keep doing what we’re doing and believe in ourselves. “We’re building a really strong base now in the forwards, getting used to each other and really trying to make an impression.” NEWCASTLE FALCONS (Vicarage Road, Saracens): Mathew Tait; Tom May; Jamie Noon (c); Toby Flood; John Rudd; Jonny Wilkinson; James Grindal; Jon Golding; Andy Long; Carl Hayman; Andy Perry; Mark Sorenson; Brent Wilson; Ben Woods; Russell Winter.
