Angling: It's a cracker

Nov 20 2003

By David Carrick, The Evening Chronicle

Angler of the week was undoubtedly Nicholas Hart from Stanley, who landed a thumping specimen rainbow of 21lb 1oz while fishing at Jubilee Trout Lakes.

The super fish took a Black Buzzer, a Jubilee favourite fly pattern.

Nicholas is no stranger to double-figure rainbows and has already had a double recently at Jubilee.

The lakes are on song at present, with some superb fish being caught.

The extension on the new shop is now complete and things are back to normal.

Derwent Reservoir is still fishing very well, with a rod average of 3.1 this week and a cracking 10lb 3oz rainbow landed by R Stirman of Nettlesworth. Mr Stirman had an excellent limit bag of eight trout for 26lb.

The in-form Sharpley Waters has restarted its floodlit sessions which are popular with anglers. These are from 5-9pm but anglers need their own source of light to change leaders and flies etc.

Ferryhill and District Angling Club are selling day tickets for grayling fishing on some of their waters. Cost is £5 per day and the fishing is catch and release only. For details contact Barry Hignett on 0191 3883557.

Anglers can buy these day tickets at Frasers in Coatsworth Road, Gateshead, at Turners of Sacriston and at Delta Flash, Ferryhill. They are available for November until February.

I am running a limited number of grayling days in December and January for anglers who would like to try it. The fishing will be on private stretches of water in our region and limited to around three anglers on any given day.

The days will be in the main informal, with the emphasis on fishing. Advice and tuition will be given where necessary. Anglers can contact me on 0191 4133789 or email davecarrickryton@hotmail.com for further details.

The December pairs competition at Stonebridge Lakes is now open for entries. Angling pairs should contact the fishery on 01609 748818 for details and registration.

I reported a 24lb 8oz salmon caught on the Northumbrian Anglers Federation last month but it was a case of mistaken identity. The angler who landed the huge fish was David Sadowski of West Denton and not his uncle, Michael.
