Ravens kept at Bay by Darmody

Sep 2 2006

By The Evening Chronicle

Whitley Bay Women's FC claimed a 5-2 win over Rutherford Ravens in the Northern Women's League.

Laura Darmody bagged two goals, Kirsty Hunter scored from a Helen Graham corner and Rachel Kay put Whitley four goals up at half-time.

The second period was more even but Darmody completed her hat-trick to secure the win before Rutherford pulled another goal back.

Manager Colin Phillips said: "If we can achieve our consistency across the whole 90 minutes we will more than hold our own this season."

* Newcastle United Women's FC attracted foreign interest at a training session this week.

Swede Bjorn Lerbs was in Newcastle for three weeks to study how the Newcastle Football Development Scheme delivered its coaching courses.

Lerbs is from the Kaiserau club near Dortmund in Germany, the base for the Spanish team in this year's World Cup.

NUWFC head coach Rob Atkin: "Bjorn was very impressed with the standard of the Newcastle players."

* The William Hunter Goalkeeping Fund have agreed to sponsor Newcastle United's Emma McEnaney (pictured above) for the coming season.

The fund, set up in memory of promising goalkeeper William Hunter who died in a road accident, offers free goalkeeping coaching to children aged seven to 17.

William's parents Tanya and Billy Hunter have worked with their late son's coaches and team-mates from Montagu Boys Club in raising funds.

The sixth course run by the Fund took place at the Newcastle Football Centre in Benwell, with one of the 500 students involved travelling from Portugal to take part.

The next course, in the October half-term holidays, will see the first session specifically for female shotstoppers.

* Kestrels remain top of the Whitfield Building Supplies Ladies League after hitting top form in defeating Lumley.

Skipper Mel Reay scored five goals and Jemma Dinning bagged a fine hat-trick.

Club Class registered a victory over Vixens, Catherine Chapman opening the scoring and went on to notch three more goals.

Anne Edwards bagged a brace to finish off the game for Club Class.

Jovial Monks' new signing Rebecca Brass marked her debut with two goals in their 5-4 win against Cleveland Hall, for whom Claire Foy celebrated a hat-trick. Alex Hamilton also notched a brace for the Monks.

* North Shields Junior Girls Under-16s are looking for new experienced players to strengthen their squad, who are in school years 10 and 11. Contact Gordon on 07875 529 891 or e-mail northshieldsgirls@yahoo.co.uk.
