BOTH of the Northumberland County Women’s Bowling Federation’s teams fell victim to Humberside in the last of the season’s matches. The Donald Steward Trophy team needed a win plus three winning rinks to guarantee the Northern Section title and a place in the National Finals at Skegness. But hopes were dashed when they were held to a 134-134 draw. After their most successful run of results for several seasons, the Silver Jubilee Vase team were in trouble from the outset and lost 150-113. BRENDA Aiken (Hebburn) won the Northern Women’s Bowling Association’s Sunshine Singles title in a closely-fought final against Jean Chapman (West End).
All rounds were played to 15-up in the second of the Association’s season of charity events. Last year’s winner Mary McGowan (Heworth) made a poor start in her semi-final against Chapman and, although she rectified the situation somewhat, Chapman stuck to her task to win the tie by 15-10. In the other semi, Maureen Sharpless (Heworth) was quickly despatched 3-15 by Aiken. Chapman made a good start of 6-3 in the final until eight shots over four ends put Aiken in the driving seat by 11-6. West End’s representative pulled back to almost level terms at 14-13 – but the Hebburn player grabbed the vital shot to achieve success. |
