THE sixth round of the Mark Williams Memorial Trophy again attracted the region’s best darts players to the Bedlington Station WMC.
Ian Gleeson, Alan Davie, Matty Willis and Graeme Stoddart were the players to feature strongly on the night.
Gleeson fought his way through a very competitive field with wins over Terry Allen, Alan Davie, Chris Lyall and Glen Baxter to reach the first-half final where he would meet Graeme Stoddart, who secured victory’s against Mark Stevenson, Ron Martin, Glen Storey and Steve Hayton.
Gleeson went into the lead with a 20-dart leg, then forged further ahead with a 17-dart game.
Stoddart found his rhythm and hit back with a 17-darter and then with scores of 137, 95 and 135 he levelled at 2-2.
Gleeson started the better in the deciding leg and with scores of 81, 95, 100 and 134 in a 17-dart game he booked his spot on finals night.
The second half of the draw was just as tight with Davie having a rough passage to the second-half final, having to overcome the attentions of Michael Gradwell, Graham Begbie, Stevie Wanless and first-half final winner Gleeson.
Matty Willis was also progressing well with wins against Chris Lyall, Simon Dodd and Rob Stanley before taking out Paul Bell in an exciting semi-final.
Davie set off in the final in fine style with scores of 97, 134, 100 and clocking out 140 for the first leg in 15 darts.
A 140, 100 and a 134 saw him increase his lead to take him closer to finals night and he duly obliged with a 20-dart winning leg to emerge the 3-0 victor.
With only two spots left for finals night a big turn-out is expected for the final round, which is held next Thursday.
