HONOURS ended even in a clash of two of the Premier League’s wannabes. Travellers Rest entertained Thomas Wilson and the Wilson scored early on. Debutant Colin Scandal was brought down after latching on to a Neil Bowman through-ball, and Grant McPhee fired home the resulting penalty. McPhee sliced into his own net from a long free-kick to even things up. It was stalemate in the second half until a powerful header from a corner gave the Travellers the lead. It looked as though they had snatched victory until Jay Scott fired in a long-range effort which took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper’s head to make it 2-2 with seconds remaining. Pelaw ran out 6-4 winners at Leam Lane thanks to goals from Rob Elliot, Lee Murdock, Dave Wall and Dave Gardiner. Gloucester hit seven goals past Shakespeare, who could only find the back of the net three times. Duke of Cumberland won a tight game 3-2 against Stormont Main after cruising at 2-0 in the first half. Chris Liddle opened the scoring and a Mark Liddle brace secured the points. New boys Felling Jem failed to make a winning start with a narrow 2-1 defeat at Kibblesworth, and Felling Ship won 3-2 at Wardley Legion. Highwayman and Corporation Club were both relegated last season and Highwayman came out on top 3-2 when the two teams clashed. In the First Division, a re-built Felling Leam Rangers went down 2-0 to a confident Barley Mow Social Club. Barley Mow Inn faced Greencroft Social and had club stalwart Michael McAdam to thank for an early lead. A Ross Preston brace gave the former Vigo team a comprehensive 3-0 lead. Greencroft rallied and pulled two goals back but Barley centre-back Richy Lamb raced the length of the pitch to wrap up the points with their fourth and final goal. Last year’s champions Dunston Social got off to a flyer when an Alan Pegram double earned them a 2-1 half-time lead against last year’s Second Division champions Bird Inn. Further strikes from Kenny Boyle and a Mick Hay free-kick saw Dunston home. Fiddlers Three defeated Holmeside 2-1 and Blue Star won by the same scoreline against Washington Legends. Victoria called time on Last Orders with a 4-2 verdict. |
