Tobin to hit the ground running

Mar 1 2007

By The Evening Chronicle

Robert Tobin is confident he can emerge from this weekend's European Indoor Championships in Birmingham with two medals.

The European under-23 400m champion believes he can succeed in the individual race and the 4x400m relay at the National Indoor Arena now he has overcome injury.

The 23-year-old is one of a new exciting young breed of British one-lap runners at ease with the expectation ahead of the championships, where he will be one of the favourites to challenge defending champion David Gillick of Ireland.

Tobin said: "I decided to come here because I want to win medals and for no other reason.

"That is my main aim - to win an individual one and also one in the relay.

"Gillick is ranked number one in Europe and he has run under 46 seconds this year - he will be the one to beat.

"It will be a great experience and I am not bothered about being one of the favourites.

"If I want to win medals and continue coming up with the goods, I have to learn to deal with any sort of pressure."

The Basingstoke athlete is also looking to at least reach the final at this year's World Championships in Osaka and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing before greater success at London 2012.

He added: "By 2012 I want to be winning medals and I do believe I have the ability to do that. It is very exciting thinking about what I can achieve."

Defending 60m champion Jason Gardener, chasing his fourth successive European title, has had welcome assistance in his contingency plans if he has to return home for the birth of his second child.

Gardener's wife Nancy is expecting the baby on Saturday - the same day Gardener starts his title defence.

Now car manufacturer Lexus, after hearing of his problem, have provided Gardener with a car should he need to travel up and down the M6.
