Terry’s perfect recipe

Sep 6 2007

Evening Chronicle

THANKS to a change in shift patterns at the Durham bakery where he works, Terry Wall is on a roll of success after a few barren years.

The Morpeth Harrier won his fourth race in a row last weekend, showing the sort of form which earned him the North of England 10,000 metres title, and also the NoE cross-country silver medal.

Wall has been a stalwart in Morpeth’s cross-country and road relay squads, but recently he has found training and racing more difficult due to his job as a baker, with early starts and late finishes.

“It certainly wasn’t easy to train and fit in time with the family along with working unsociable hours,” said Wall, whose has recent success at the Houghton and Peterlee, Raby Castle, Newton Aycliffe and New Marske.

“I have to admit the past four or five years have been difficult, and my running certainly suffered.

“However, I’ve now got a much more acceptable routine, and though training and racing doesn’t get any easier, I’m starting to enjoy my athletics a lot more.

“It’s always pleasing to win any race, but I know I still have a long way to go before I get back to where I was a few years ago.”

Wall, never a one to bypass a race, will quickly don his racing shoes once more when he expects to line-up in the TeesPride 10k in Middlesbrough in 10 days’ time, before embarking on his winter campaign.

“I’m expecting a much tougher race at Middlesbrough, but I won’t mind because that’s what will bring me on.

“It will be a good work- out in what will be a much stronger field to what I’ve faced in my last few races.

“This will be just what I need before the winter, where I hope to get involved in the cross-country scene once more.

“I’ve always been a supporter of the Harrier League and, hopefully, I’ll be putting in a few appearances this time round.”
