England look for strong North East show

Aug 16 2007

by Bill McGuirk, Evening Chronicle

THE British and Irish Masters Cross-Country International is scheduled for Saturday, November 17, in the picturesque setting of Stormont Castle, Belfast.

In the past the region has had a strong representation, not just in the England teams, but in the other nations.

And England team managers Kim Davison and Harry Matthews, who both compete for Elswick Harriers, are hoping that continues for the trip to Northern Ireland.

“Once again the Veteran Athletics Association – North East (VAA-NE) is anticipating a good deal of interest from athletes to be considered for the England team,” said Matthews, who will be putting his name forward for selection in the over-60 team.

“The North East has a strong tradition of supplying competitors for this high-quality event and I’m hopeful that we can have a potent turn out once again, even though the international is being held in Northern Ireland.

“This year sees the introduction of the over-35 age group into the championships so this should give more athletes the chance of representing their country.”

Teams will be selected in the following age categories: W35 to W65 and M35 to M70, both in five-year age groups.

England team selection will take place on October 6 and any athlete interested in being considered should contact Matthews on (01661) 835 145 or email matthewsmhr@tiscali. co.uk as early as possible.

Athletes will be required to give details of results from regional, national and international events as well as local road, track and cross-country races.
