We can Max it up says brave Jones

One gold medal and a bronze did not paint a true picture of the British achievements at the World Indoor Championships according to UK Athletics performance director Max Jones.

Jones predicted three or four medals for the Norwich Union GB side before they left for the event in Budapest but was not overly disappointed by the outcome.

"When you go into an indoor championships like this, it's far different to the outdoors," Jones said. "You look for individual performances."

On a weekend of triumph and tragedy, Jones' predictions would have been spot on but for the unfortunate fall of Kelly Holmes in the women's 1500 metres and the disqualification of Michael East in the men's race over the same distance. There was a glorious start to the three-day championships when Jason Gardener won Britain's first-ever 60m gold medal with a magnificent and relatively easy win on Friday.

Holmes, last year's silver medallist, was expected to mount just as good a challenge in her final and deliver a medal.

However, just when it looked as if the Commonwealth champion was on target to mount her charge to golden glory, she fell flat on her face in the Stadion Arena.

On Sunday the programme started with the highly-fancied women's 4x400m relay team being eliminated from the heats.

Fortunately there was a marvellous start to the final schedule in the programme when Jo Fenn, last with 400m remaining, ran out of her skin for an unexpected 800m bronze medal.

Then came just as good a display from East, until he obstructed Kenya's Laban Rotich almost on the finishing line and paid the ultimate penalty.

Jones said: "From these championships, Jo Fenn has put herself into the medal zone and Mike East did prove he can do it.

"Long jumper Chris Tomlinson also proved himself and I think there is much more to come from him."

Despite setting a UK indoor record of 8.17m, the Teessider was placed only fifth.
