Johanna wins call for England trial

Feb 28 2004

By Mike Cotton, Evening Gazette

Nineteen-year-old Joanna Jackson of Middlesbrough and Cleveland was again in impressive form at the English National Cross Country Championships held at Temple Newsome Park in Leeds.

Running in the Under-20 race she finished in 12th place in a top class field and following her silver and bronze medals at the North-eastern and Northern Championships respectfully.

She has now been selected to represent the North-eastern Counties at the Annual Inter-Counties Championships to be held at Nottingham a week today.

This race will also be the trial race to decide selection for the England team at the World Cross Country Championships.

Julia Orr of Darlington's Quakers AC also impressed in the Under-17 race finishing in 17th place and she too has been selected to represent the north-east.

Other outstanding performances by runners from the North Yorkshire and South Durham Harrier League's clubs came from Warren Roberts (Shildon) who was sixth in the Under-15 Boys race and Alex Wheatman (Scarborough) who was seventh in the Under-13 girls championship.

Jonathon Taylor of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) was this area's leading runner in the Under-17 youth race in 43rd place- a position equalled by Andrea Woodbine (Richmond and Zetland) - in the senior ladies race with Darlington's Susie Rutherford in 60th place in a field of nearly 500.

A massive field of nearly 2,000 starters in the senior men's race saw Nigel Orr lead home Darlington's team to 76th team place with Middlesbrough and Cleveland the only other club from this area to complete a team result finishing in 100th place, led home by Gordon Baird.
