Brit Weir lands top job in USA

Dec 20 2003

By The Evening Chronicle

Robert Weir, a two-times Commonwealth Games gold medallist for England, has been appointed as a team administrator for the USA's 2005 World Championships team.

Weir, who competed at three Olympic Games for Great Britain, was recently appointed head coach of Stanford University's men's track and field side.

His promotion to the top post at the Californian University came after he served as throws coach there for more than a decade.

Weir, who won gold in the hammer in the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the discus 16 years later, was tipped to become supremo at the UK Athletics High Performance Centre in his home city of Birmingham.

But the skills of the former British discus record holder have been recognised by the Americans.

NHAILE Gebrselassie is set to compete in America for the first time in almost eight years next month at the Boston Indoor Games.

It will be only the third time in his legendary career the Ethiopian will have raced in the US when he lines up in Boston, the first event in the 2004 USA Track & Field Indoor Golden Spike Tour.

In his previous two outings in the States, Gebrselassie won silver in the IAAF World junior cross country in Boston in 1992, and four years later captured the first of his two 10,000m Olympic gold medals at the Atlanta Games.
