Gretna 1, Stirling Albion 0

Aug 21 2005

By The Sunday Sun

Gretna extended their winning sequence to four games but they were pushed all the way by a hard-working Stirling Albion side.

Miles Hogarth did well to keep out an early effort from Gretna's Ryan McGuffie and for a while little was seen from the Stirling attack.

Their attempts on goal were mainly from long range and, with Gretna fairly dominant, the home team took the lead in the 33rd minute.

James Grady was again the marksman as he collected the ball 30 yards out, ran at the visiting defence and unleashed a tremendous shot into the top corner of the net.

McGuffie had a chance to double the lead five minutes later. He broke clear of the visitors' defence but shot wide with only Hogarth to beat.

Right on the stroke of half-time Gretna were fortunate when Main fumbled a shot from Paddy Connolly on to the post, but he recovered in time to save.

Although the home side had more of the play, their efforts were constantly thwarted by the Stirling rearguard. David Bingham and Ryan Baldacchino went close, but on 71 minutes Baldacchino was sent off when he was given a second yellow card.

Soon afterwards, David Turnbull headed against the bar as Stirling threatened, but in the last few minutes Gretna regained the ascendancy and only a splendid save by Hogarth prevented Grady from adding to his earlier goal.

GRETNA: Main 7, Collins 7, McQuilken 7, Tosh 8, Townsley 8, Innis 7, Baldacchino 8, McGuffie 8, Deuchar 7 (Nichols 6), Bingham 7 (Skelton 6), GRADY 8.

STIRLING ALBION: Hogarth, Nugent, Forsyth (Dunn), McNally, Graham, Boyack, Hay, Aitken (Wilson), Connolly (O'Brien), Turnbull, Roycroft.
