Gunshots halt Mali qualifier

Mar 28 2005

By The Evening Chronicle

Mali's World Cup qualifier at home to Togo was abandoned last night after serious crowd trouble erupted in the closing stages of the contest.

In chaotic scenes, gunshots were fired as thousands tried to flee the stadium in Bamako.

The trouble flared when Togo scored in the 90th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Mali had been 1-0 up in the contest before conceding an 83rd-minute equaliser.

Rift may heal

Wales assistant manager Roy Evans has suggested that the door is still open for Robbie Savage to return to the international fold.

The former Liverpool boss, now helping John Toshack run the Wales set-up, has implied that the rift between the Blackburn midfielder and the man who replaced Mark Hughes as manager could be patched up.

Evans said: "I am not privy to what is going on with Robbie and John but if it sorts itself out then that is terrific."

Iker Reds link

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas claims Manchester United are interested in signing him. The 23-year-old Spain international is the No 1 choice at the Bernabeu but has been tipped to solve Man U's keeper problems.

Mexican rave

Mexico overcame the USA 2-1 in the Azteca Stadium on Sunday to go to the top of the final group in the Concacaf's World Cup qualifying table.

Fans backing

Liverpool's fans were praised for their efforts after a near 39,000 crowd turned up to witness the tsunami charity match at Anfield. Liverpool Legends beat their celebrity opponents 6-2.

Leading way

Arsenal followed up their 8-1 mauling of Birmingham Ladies in midweek with a vital 2-1 victory at Leeds which moved them top of the Nationwide Women's Premier League.
