Cole battling for fitness

Feb 22 2005

By Evening Gazette

Ashley Cole is battling against time to recover from illness in time for Arsenal's Champions League tie at Bayern Munich tonight.

Cole returned to training on Sunday after missing two games due to a virus but is still not back at his best and his fitness will be decided upon shortly before kick-off.

Boss Arsene Wenger revealed: "Ashley has travelled but he is still not great. He has been in bed for a week. He has been a bit flat in training and although he was a bit better today, he is still a bit short in his fitness."

Edu has recovered from a hamstring injury and is set to be reunited in central midfield with Patrick Vieira. Right-back Justin Hoyte is still out with an ankle injury while recent signing Emmanuel Eboue is not eligible for Champions League duty.

Sol Campbell is still missing due to a twisted ankle, while Dennis Bergkamp, who does not fly, also did not make the trip.

Meanwhile Liverpool face the first leg of their Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen tonight without a string of top stars, including skipper Steven Gerrard who is suspended but will be available for the second leg in Germany in a fortnight.

Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino are both cup-tied while Xabi Alonso, Djibril Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle are all unavailable through injury.

Harry Kewell is likely to return after recovering from an Achilles injury, but there is also an injury doubt over Neil Mellor who has been struggling with a knee injury.

Leverkusen go into the game on the back of a 4-2 league victory against Nurnberg.

Coach Klaus Augenthaler said: "We could have had worse luck with the draw because there are some huge matches in the last 16.

"But when you have won a group with Madrid, Roma and Kiev you have every right to have an eye on the next round."

Defender Jens Nowotny has been ruled out after suffering knee ligament damage.

Assistant coach Terry McDermott is backing Newcastle United to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. The Magpies will entertain either Tottenham or Nottingham Forest at St James' Park in the last eight.

Whoever wins that replay, McDermott is expecting a tough game - but he reckons home advantage will count for a great deal.

McDermott said: "Getting a home draw is the most important thing and we'd have taken anyone but, like anyone else, we wanted to avoid Arsenal and Manchester United.

* The draw for the FA Cup sixth round is:

Newcastle v Tottenham or Nottm Forest.

Southampton or Brentford v Man Utd.

Bolton v Arsenal or Sheff Utd.

Burnley or Blackburn v Leicester.

Ties to be played on March 12 & 13.
