Didier Drogba of Chelsea celebrates with his team-mates, Arjen Roben & Frank Lampard

Chelsea assistant boss Steve Clarke hit back at Arsene Wenger's attack on the Blues' style of play by insisting that his side are entertaining the Premiership - as well as being poised to win it.

Clarke maintained that Chelsea would allow nothing to deflect them from their path to a first title in 50 years.

Wenger had rather damned the league leaders with faint praise, by declaring: "You could say that our football was more attractive to watch but they are very efficient."

Comparing Chelsea to a "matador, who waits until the bull gets weak to kill him", he insisted: "We have a different philosophy and way of playing, with a more offensive and risky game".

Clarke responded: "If other people want to say we're not entertaining, that's fine. That's for them to say. I think we're very entertaining.

"Why should we be concerned about anything like that? You watch the games - you tell me whether we're efficient or entertaining. I think that our fans went home happy after beating Portsmouth.

"I don't talk about other teams. We just have to win the league. If you do that, then you'll entertain your fans.

"If we keep on winning every week, they can say what they want. Nothing is going to deflect us from what we're after.

"In fact, it's great that they're all talking about us. If we were fourth in the league, I don't think that Mr Ferguson or Mr Wenger would speak very much about us.

"We don't look at teams below us. We don't think about their results or what they're doing as it doesn't matter.

"If we're at the top and win, we can relax and have a glass of wine as it doesn't matter what else happens that weekend. It's hard to see a danger at the moment. But we won't become complacent, we look to win every match. We need to win 11 matches now."

Chelsea have certainly built their title challenge around a superb defence, which has kept clean sheets in each of their seven consecutive league wins since drawing at Highbury in December.

Clarke admitted: "Everything we do is geared around being very hard to beat. Once you're in front, you have to control the game."

Chelsea may have started the season slowly, with four 1-0 wins in their opening eight league games, but they have since scored four times against Blackburn, West Brom, Fulham, Newcastle and Norwich.

They scored three times without reply against Portsmouth, taking their tally for the season to 48 goals - 11 more than Manchester United and just five fewer than Arsenal. Arjen Robben, who can hardly be criticised for lack of entertainment, said: "Someone said to me that, when we score one goal, we win our games.

"It's almost like that as the defence is doing very well and Claude Makelele is also very important in our game.

"But of course we want to entertain. We're not going into games to win 1-0, we want to score more goals.

"Everyone wants us to lose games, but that's just a big compliment and we don't feel the pressure in the dressing-room. We just want to win and that's all."
