Carlisle 1, Doncaster 0

Feb 24 2008

by Darren Kelso, Sunday Sun

DANNY GRAHAM’S third goal in four games was enough to give Carlisle the points in their promotion clash with Doncaster Rovers.

It was Graham’s 12th goal of the season and gave United an 11th successive home league win.

Cleveland Taylor was the provider as he dispossessed Gareth Roberts close to the byline before crossing for Graham to finish with a half volley from just inside the six-yard box.

The goal came just before the break and it was all that Carlisle deserved after a spirited performance against a powerful Rovers side unbeaten in their previous 11 away games.

Carlisle boss John Ward said: “I’m really excited about the performance, both teams tried to play football in the right way and that was difficult in the blustery conditions.

“We had a gameplan and the discipline of the team was great and the players stuck to their jobs well.

“It was a good advert for League One football . . . the lads couldn't have given any more effort.

“Eleven home wins is fantastic and I’ll talk about our away form next week,” he said wryly.

The manager praised Graham for his strike, saying: “He’s back on form. He did exceptionally well with his goal.”

Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll admitted: “We are disappointed not to get something out of the game. I thought we did enough to warrant a point.

“We were excellent in the second half, but couldn’t find the finishing touch.”

Rovers almost went in front in the 33rd minute, but Simon Hackney was on hand to make a goal-line clearance from a Mark McCammon header.

McCammon brought the best out of Keiren Westwood on the half hour when the keeper reacted smartly to punch the ball off his head.

At the other end, Neil Sullivan made a fine stop when Taylor robbed Brian Stock to fire in a cross.

Minutes earlier, Sullivan had produced an excellent save to deny Danny Livesey a goal with a flicked header.

United had a great chance to make it 2-0 early in the second half.

Evan Horwood did well to reach the by-line but Graham fired straight at Sullivan from 10 yards.

Second earlier, Paul Green fired in a angled shot that flew just wide.

A slick Carlisle passing move tore open the visitors’ defence in the 86th minute.

But Paul Raven, in an unfamiliar attacking position, pulled his shot wide.
