WITH a paltry tally of two points from the last 33 available away from home, Pools are looking anxiously over their shoulders. The visitors have not won on the road since November 3 and the long trek home from the south coast last night will have been another unhappy and miserable trawl up the motorway. Danny Wilson is fast becoming a manager under pressure. The travelling fans called for his head yesterday and, on this performance, Pools looked like a side who are heading for a worrying relegation scrap. Bournemouth, destined for the drop out of League One this season after going into administration, are no great shakes. But they showed more fight and ability than the visitors, who are five points above the drop zone. The way Hartlepool are going they must fear the worst. “I am sick of saying the same things every week,” admitted Wilson. “This was another example of where we were not ruthless enough in attack, then give the ball away sloppily and pay the price. “Yes, we got into good positions, but we didn’t work their goalkeeper anywhere near enough, which is disappointing.” Wilson dropped keeper Jan Budtz after he was guilty of a costly error in his last outing. Arran Lee-Barrett was handed a recall, but he was guilty of a mistake in the lead up to the opening goal. He raced out of his area, but sliced his clearance and was then forced to backpedal. From the ensuing corner, Sam Vokes got a free header to nod into the net. A swift break by Jo Kuffour saw him go by Graeme Lee with ease and he created another chance. Instead of passing to the unmarked Lee Bradbury, he opted to shoot and the opportunity went begging. Pools had two half-chances to get one back, but both openings went begging. First, a Graeme Lee free kick was deflected into the path of David Foley, but keeper Gareth Stewart was out quickly to smother. Then Tom Craddock, making his first start after moving on-loan from Middlesbrough, was put through by Foley, but he shot wide. And as the half came to a close, Vokes took possession, raced ahead and curled a shot into the net from distance. Given their appalling away record, there looked little chance of Pools coming back into the game and so it proved. Substitute Andy Monkhouse almost scored shortly after his introduction, but saw his 20 yard shot blocked. Clear openings were few and far between, even when the home keeper was forced off by injury and had to be replaced by a rookie. Pools face a crucial run-in to try and preserve their League One status. |
