Gretna maintained their challenge for promotion when they gave their best performance of the season inflicting a first home defeat on leaders Stirling Albion.
They took the game to their opponents from the start and were rewarded after 11 minutes in what proved to be the only goal.
Ryan Baldacchino broke down the right and his low cross was turned in by Ian Stevens from close range.
Stirling enjoyed a spell of pressure forcing several corners, but the Gretna defence stood firm.
Early in the second half Gretna appeared to have added to their lead. Stirling's goalkeeper Myles Hogarth could only punch the ball out to Gavin Skelton whose fierce shot was touched in by Stevens, but the assistant referee flagged for off-side.
It is difficult not to feel a little despondent about Sunderland at the moment because no matter what sort of spin you try to put on it, three back to back defeats is difficult to accept....
