160 jobs to go as factory closes

A FACTORY which makes steering systems for the motoring industry is to close with the loss of 160 jobs.
Japanese manufacturing giant NSK is to close one of its three plants in Peterlee, County Durham, and move some of its production work to Poland.
The decision will see 20 temporary workers lose their jobs by the end of the year, with the remaining 140 staff made redundant by Spring 2010.
NSK also operates two other factories in Peterlee which make ball bearings and employ 400 people who will not be affected by the announcement.
Director of manufacturing and procurement Tim Dawson said: "We very much regret having to take this difficult decision and we will do all we can to help employees find alternative employment through placement programmes and other practical support."
The steering systems plant on Doxford Drive supplies most major car makers with the exception of Nissan, despite its close proximity to company's Sunderland factory.
