Missing memorial home to rest after 30 years

May 13 2003

By Peter Taylor, The Evening Chronicle

A memorial to nine brave men who sacrificed their lives in the Second World War has finally come home after going missing for around 30 years.

The slate slab, embossed with gold lettering dedicated to the servicemen heroes from Holywell village in Blyth Valley, was found only by chance last year.

It turned up on a caravan site many miles away in the Northumberland town of Rothbury, where it had been used as a flagstone in a border around one of the caravans.

No one knows how it got there but its rescue campaign was successfully sealed when civic dignitaries attended a re-dedication service for the plaque which has been lovingly installed as part of the village war memorial.

The service was conducted by the Rev. Malcolm Sellers, of Elsdon Avenue United Reformed Church, Seaton Delaval, and attended by relatives of the war dead. They included the niece of tank driver Ronny Taylor, Roberta Storey, 64, of Watson Avenue, Dudley.

Kathleen Black, chairman of Seaton Delaval and District Local History Society, said: "The church where the plaque stood was demolished about 30 years ago and it had been missing until it was found at Rothbury.

"It is lovely that it has finally come home. It is in a lovely setting. It is really beautiful."

The plaque was discovered by June O'Neill, from North Shields.

She had it cleaned up and passed on to local historian Mrs Black.

The plaque reads: "In grateful memory of the men of Holywell who fell in the World War 1939 - 45."

It lists: A Cairns; N Ellison; W T Gray; T H Hume; J S Simpson; P Snowdon; R Taylor; P Turnbull; and J H Young.
