Girl, 5, saves mum

May 13 2003

By Owen Mcateer, The Evening Chronicle

A brave five-year-old calmly picked up the phone and dialled 999 for an ambulance when her mum collapsed.

Caitlin Robson called the paramedics after her mum Lisa collapsed during breakfast at their home in Jakes Terrace, Chester-le-Street.

She gave her address to the operator and then followed instructions of opening the door for the emergency team when they arrived.

After paramedics Ian Lovett and Trina Bergen arrived, Caitlin even helped to collect her mum's things together and travelled with her to the hospital.

Lisa, a 24-year-old single mum who is training as a hairdresser, suffers from an irregular heartbeat and was kept in hospital overnight following the drama. She said: "I still can't believe how calm she was. Even when I was lying unconscious on the floor, and she was all alone, she didn't panic and did exactly what she had been taught to do.

"As it's just the two of us in the house I've taught her what to do if there was ever an emergency. But there's a big difference between knowing what to do and actually putting it into action.

She stayed calm and did all the right things."

Caitlin, who celebrated her fifth birthday on Friday, was praised by the crew who attended the incident last Wednesday.

Paramedic Ian Lovett said: "When we arrived Caitlin had already opened the front door, just as she had been told, and we could see Lisa lying on the floor.

Paul Liversidge, director of accident and emergency for the North East Ambulance Service, said: "It's amazing what kids are capable of and it's important that children are taught not to be frightened to dial 999 in an emergency."
