Day to remember for happy couple

May 13 2003

By Sara Wallis, Evening Chronicle

Dying teenager Martin Black and his bride Susan were all smiles as they sealed their love by tying the knot.

On the sunny steps of Gateshead Civic Centre's register office, the couple were showered with confetti from about 100 family and friends celebrating the happy occasion.

Leukaemia sufferer Martin was given about three months to live in April and plans for the ceremony, which was not due to take place until June 6, were brought forward because his health has deteriorated.

The 19-year-old, from Felling, Gateshead, has lost the strength in his legs and spent yesterday's emotional 30 minute ceremony in a wheelchair.

As exclusively revealed in the Chronicle, the couple are now trying for a test-tube baby and have started IVF treatment which will use sperm taken from Martin when he was first diagnosed with leukaemia in November 2000.

Receiving a hug from his new wife, he said: "It was a very good ceremony, I am very pleased with it.

"Sue looked very nice - no, gorgeous, very gorgeous. Everything is going ahead with the baby and I am very pleased with that."

Mrs Black, who wore a full-length golden cream dress, made her entrance before her husband in a white Austin Princess and the guests went for a quick celebratory drink before the bridegroom arrived.

Susan, from Donwell, Washington, said: "It was brilliant, lovely, perfect. I went for a drink because I was a bit nervous obviously.

"Everything went brilliantly, everybody gets emotional when people are getting married and we are just the same."

Mrs Black's three bridesmaids wore cream and gold tops and long gold skirts with matching heels.

Martin's mother Gillian, 48, said: "It's been a really good day, I did not think we would get him here but we did. Everything went off all right, it's a nice turn out. I did have a few tears in my eyes.

"It's been a rush, I didn't think we would, but we've done it."
