A major conference to highlight some of the complex issues surrounding bullying and how to tackle them is being held in the North-East.
Organised by the internationally-renowned expert on child bullying Dr Val Besag, the conference is being held in conjunction with The Journal to support our Be a Buddy not a Bully campaign.
The day-long event will look at all aspects of the problem, focusing particularly on the increasing problem of bullying among girls and the use of technology such as mobile phones and e-mail to carry out the attacks.
Schools from around the region will also be taking part in a series of workshops.
Dr Besag, who now runs her own consultancy business and is based in Jesmond, Newcastle, said the aim was to shed light on some of the complex issues surrounding bullying.
"Despite significant Government funding, bullying is still evident in our schools," she said. "This conference will concentrate on identifying responses to the problem.
"We are delighted The Journal has agreed to support the conference which we hope will form a crucial part in the drive to tackle bullying in schools."
Held on Friday, May 17 at the Swallow Hotel, in Gateshead, the programme will include discussions on racist and homophobic bullying, suicide and depression among children and schools' legal responsibilities.
The conference is open to all interested parties at a cost of £110 per delegate. For information contact Dr Besag on (0191) 281-7298 or e-mail her on training@valbesag.co.uk
