Vicar To Bless Same-sex Duo

May 28 2001

Evening Chronicle

A vicar told today why he has agreed to marry two women in a church service.

It was revealed on Saturday how sex-swap patient Mitch Gardner and his fiancée Elaine Gardner plan to tie the knot in July.

Mitch, 32, was born a woman but is to undergo a sex change operation after falling for his sweetheart.

Tyneside vicar the Rev Jonathan Adams has agreed to bless the couple's "marriage".

And today he called for homosexuals and transsexuals who want to get married to be recognised in law.

Mr Adams said: "What I want to do with Elaine and Mitch is to give them the same opportunity as any couple who want to get married.

"It is a blessing which is outside the normal constraints of a Church of England wedding ceremony. It means the couple are free to choose their own words and express how they feel about each other - it is more meaningful.

"It's about a celebration of love and fidelity between two people. Personally, I don't see why someone should be denied that because of their lifestyle.

"I don't understand why people in these circumstances cannot be legally recognised as a married couple."

Elaine and Mitch - who was born Michelle - hope to have a white wedding at St James's United Reformed Church in Northumberland Road, Newcastle.

The Chronicle revealed on Saturday how the pair found love after meeting in a Tyneside pub.

Mitch, who is waiting for a sex change operation on the NHS, proposed to Elaine, 41, after they moved in together at their house in Heaton, Newcastle, two years ago.

The wedding will end years of heartache and depression for Mitch, who has tried to kill himself following taunts about his sexuality. Mr Adams, a member of the Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement on Tyneside, has already performed several "wedding" services for gay and lesbian couples.

He said: "I've been at St James's for three gay blessings and I know the clergy there are happy with that.

"I am in discussions with the church about having the ceremony there, but obviously it still has to be decided. It won't be regarded as a legal wedding but we will have a certificate drawn up.

"Not everyone in the Church believes these services are right, and I respect that opinion, but for me it is not a big deal. I think it's more important to endorse two people's exclusive commitment to each other. "

Mitch said: "We're delighted the Rev Adams has agreed to perform the service. It means so much to Elaine and I to be together as man and wife.

"We want to be accepted by people as a proper couple, and that's why we're getting married."

Added Elaine: "This is not a gay marriage. I love Mitch as a man and I want to be with him."
